Review: Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

I picked this book up from the library a few months ago and I’m glad I did. I read it pre- read it write creation, yet it was good enough for me to still be thinking about it months later.
Small- town Mercy Falls has one thing most other small- towns lack- a pack of wolves that inhabit the forest all winter long.

Ever since she can remember, Grace has been mesmerized by the wolves, in particular a yellow-eyed wolf, ‘her wolf’.  Every winter when the wolves return, Grace looks forward to seeing her special wolf. He’s always there for her by Christmas, gazing out of the forest into her backyard.

Sam, on the other hand, lives for the summer. Summer is the only time he can truly be human- have human thoughts, human logic, look like a human.

When a series of events bring Sam and Grace together in a situation they never expected, both of their lives are destined to be changed forever, whether that be for the good or for the bad. Now they have to fight to stay together or risk losing each other for good.

I have to admit, when I first picked up ‘Shiver’ I was a bit skeptical. I thought it was going to be just another boy meets girl book that would bore me within the first few chapters. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It captivated me from the very start. I simply couldn’t put it down. I read all 380 pages in about three days and loved every minute of it. This isn’t your typical romance book or your typical werewolf book, it’s something else altogether.

Shiver’s auther, Maggie Stiefvater, is probably among my top 10, if not 5, favourite authors now after reading Shiver. She is an incredible writer who uses a fantastic mix of sarcasm, wit and humor to make her stories interesting, even in slower scenes.

I would recommend Shiver to anyone. And that takes a lot. One other thing? I just found out that Shiver is in the very first stages of becoming a movie. (Score!) The rights are owned by Warner Bros. Unfortunately, they haven’t even begun casting yet, so there’s going to be a wait until the movie. All the more time for you to track down this book and read it for yourself!
